I understand that if one enjoyed it the first time around you would favour it, over AMLOR (2019), as it is the one you first heard/remember. My problem with AMLOR (1987) is, unlike many other Pink Floyd albums, it sounds trendy, of it's time, in fashion. I suppose I will have a trawl through the 1987 - 1989 recordings to see if I can assemble a decent version of the tour as it was played, with and without Echoes. I also want a new DSOT drawn from the first 11 shows that includes Echoes. OK now I have a problem, ,after listening to Delicate Sound of Thunder 1988, I want a 23 track version of the 1988 mix!Įach has their merits, however the original has better dynamics, without checking the DR values I noticed that I could listen to the 1988 with the amp up 5bB on the 2019. On The Turning Away and Sorrow rise to a new level when performed live. I would probably give the 2019 updated remix the nod on some tracks over the 80's version, particularly Dogs of War (which I really didn't like on the original), however I prefer it live. I preferred Roger's album, by a small margin, released earlier that summer. I did buy AMLOR, the day it was released, and the CD Singles back in 1987, I never really loved it. Note: all the edits between tracks are to blend the audience sounds. I'd be interested in the views of people who hold a high opinion of the original AMLOR or the 2019 remix what they think of the performances on DSOT of AMLOR tracks. This has more life than either Studio Version, shame they weren't able to tour this for a few months before recording in the Studio. But then again, I consider that half of AMLoR is top shelf Floyd: the massive Sorrow, the delicate-turn-to-thunder On The Turning Away and the delicious Learning To Fly are as good as anything Floyd ever did. I loved them then, just the way they were, and I love them even more now, for being the way they were then. If there was one thing I learned with The Later Years Box is to let the 80s Floyd be the 80s Floyd. I’m glad the remix happened, as David got it out of his system and even we all got it out of our systems, as I think we all wondered how would the album sound without all the 80s. I listened to the remix a number of times when it came out and it just didn’t click with me. ![]() That’s exactly the sound that this set of songs require. Whilst TDB is a ‘luminous’ sounding album, because that’s what the songs ask, AMLoR is a dark sounding record because that’s how it’s supposed to sound. What I didn’t foresee with my prospect of a de80sized AMLoR was that by sucking the 80s out of these songs, it would also suck the soul out of them. I have to say, I was part of the crowd who was very excited at the prospect of hearing an enhanced AMLoR with organic instrumentation, as I envisioned (or should I say, fantasised) with an AMLoR sounding like The Division Bell. ![]()
